How does being a part-time ECT affect induction?
Induction progresses on a pro-rata basis, Therefore, ECTs who complete some or all of their induction part-time have a different induction timeline compared to full-time ECTs. Fulltime ECTs complete induction after 6 terms (around two years). For a parttime teacher, induction lasts longer because each term counts proportionally to their FTE. For instance, a part-time teacher working at 0.5 FTE would have an induction period of four years, not two years, as they are completing it at a pro-rata rate.

How often should formal lesson observations take place for part-time ECTs?
It is advisable that lesson observations take place at regular intervals, once per half-term. However, if the ECT works for a small amount per week, please contact the appropriate body for advice.

How often should mentor meetings take place for part-time ECTs?
Mentor meetings should take place on a pro-rata basis. If you would like advice on how these should be organised, please contact the appropriate body.

How often will part-time ECTs have professional progress reviews?
The statutory guidance stipulates that all ECTs, full and part-time, must have a progress review once a term. This is not pro-rata. Therefore, even if the ECT works a FTE as low as 0.2 FTE, a progress review must be submitted once a term.

Is it possible for a part-time ECT to finish at the same time as a full-time ECT?
Upon completion of two calendar years of induction, a part-time ECT may elect to conclude induction on the basis that the headteacher is able to confirm the ECT has met the Teachers’ Standards. In this scenario, the headteacher/principal may consult with the appropriate body on whether a reduced induction is appropriate. A reduced induction application should on be made on the basis that the ECT has met the Teacher’s Standards and only with the agreement of the ECT concerned.
Contact the appropriate body for further information or you would like to apply for a reduced induction for an ECT.

When do assessments take place for part-time ECTs?
Assessments are submitted for part-time ECTs once they have completed the equivalent of Year 1 (terms 1-3 at pro-rata rate) or equivalent of Year 2 (terms 4-6 at pro-rata rate). For instance, if an ECT works 0.5 FTE, terms 1-5 will be PPRs, then term 6 will be their end of year 1 assessment.
