H. Extensions or Reduced Inductions

When might induction be extended?

· Absence: If an ECT has absence of 30 or more days absence per year of induction, the induction period must be extended by a minimum of the absence. Please note that statutory leave does not count as absence. Please see the FAQ regarding statutory leave. The Induction Tutor must contact the appropriate body if an ECT reaches 30 days of absence or more within one year of induction.

· If there are extenuating circumstances, e.g. personal difficulties, disruption in school the AB may agree to extend the induction period.

· If the ECT is at risk of failing induction the AB may consider whether an extension may enable the ECT to pass induction. An extension should not be granted if there is no likelihood that the ECT will pass induction despite the extension.

When might induction be reduced?

The DfE is clear that it is only in exceptional circumstances that a reduction should be considered. The two year programme has been introduced to ensure that ECTs have a secure basis for their future career. Contact the appropriate body for further information or you would like to apply for a reduced induction for an ECT.

Extensive prior experience of teaching whole classes to the Teachers’ Standards

There is a rigorous process to go through before the AB will agree a reduction requiring the AB to determine that the ECT has ‘extensive prior experience of teaching whole classes to the Teachers’ Standards’.

If an ECT has gained QTS via the Assessment Only route, a reduction is likely to be approved.

If the school feels that there are other circumstances e.g. apprenticeship preceded by significant experience in school, they should contact the AB to discuss this.

Part-time ECT who has completed two calendar years of induction

Upon completion of two calendar years of induction, a part-time ECT may elect to conclude induction on the basis that the headteacher is able to confirm the ECT has met the Teachers’ Standards. In this scenario, the headteacher/principal may consult with the appropriate body on whether a reduced induction is appropriate. A reduced induction application should on be made on the basis that the ECT has met the Teacher’s Standards and only with the agreement of the ECT concerned.
