D. Roles and Responsibilities

Can the headteacher be the induction tutor?

We would advise on the role of the induction tutor being held by a separate person to that of the headteacher but if it needs to be the same person, this can be possible.

Can the Induction Lead / Tutor and Mentor to the ECT be the same person?

While the DFE aim to separate the roles of Mentor and Induction Lead/ Tutor, we understand that in a small number of situations (e.g. very small primary schools), the same person will need to hold both roles.

Please contact us if this is the case so we can advise on safeguards.

What is the role of the ECT's Mentor?

The mentor’s role is to support the ECT’s professional development in line with the ECF based training programme

It is not the mentor’s responsibility to assess the progress of the ECT.

What is the role of the Induction Lead / Tutor?

They should:

· Ensure a range of monitoring/evidence gathering activities (alongside the mentor)

· Arrange regular formal observations and feedback (good practice is half termly)

· Oversee the progress and development of the ECT, assessing their progress and being alert to any concerns and communicating them promptly to the Headteacher and Appropriate Body

· Conduct termly progress reviews with the ECT and submit them to the Appropriate Body
